A Fruitful Garden
In the Bible, the Garden of Gethsemane is the best known as the location where Jesus prayed in anguish on the night of his betrayal. But it was also a fruitful olive grove where olives were grown and pressed into oil for use in ceremonies, quite possibly for the Jerusalem temple itself.
Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Windsor, Ontario, Canada is also a fruitful garden. It is a place where people gather to grow in the Word and Sacraments of Christ, where we break bread and fellowship with one another. It is a refuge from the world which promises much, but delivers little in the way of true healing and growth. It is a place where Christ meets us where we are, but helps us increase our faith and calls us to repentence.
A Small Piece of Heaven
Gethsemane Lutheran Church is not your typical church, Lutheran or otherwise. About twenty years ago, we welcomed immigrants from South Sudan and Ethiopia into our church. Since then, our church community has diversified to include a variety of ethnicities and languages.
In Revelation 7:9, John speaks of an image of heaven in which “a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb…” At GLC, we like to think that we are an earthly representation of this heavenly reality.
Although our primary services are in English and Nuer, at least ten languages are spoken by our members. Everyone is welcome here, no matter where you are from or where you have been.
